Day 99

When they move into an apartment together, they hang a calendar on the back of the front door.

At first, only the ordinary things get written onto the dates - things like birthdays, business meetings… all the pieces of their lives that existed before they got together. But one day, something new appears beside a scrawl signifying Lizzie’s birthday:

First Kiss.

Lizzie grins when she finds it, taking it as a challenge. Together they fill in almost every blank space with things that have happened already and things they’re planning. The words range from First Time Lizzie said ‘I love you’ to Disney Karaoke with Gigi & Fitz, 8:30pm to Dinner With Caroline & her “just a friend” to Flight to England at 4am to Caught Lizzie Looking At Wedding Dresses (“I told you, I was looking for Jane-” “I know, dear. And I still don’t believe you.”) to Jane’s Baby Shower to Caroline’s Wedding to First Time I Saw William Drunk to Theatre @ 9:15pm to Our Anniversary… and so on.

It becomes a tradition, filling in their calendar. They write in every little thing possible, even if it’s something as small as those rare days where their lunch breaks sync up so they can spend them together.

Years after, when they’ve just gotten back from the hospital, Lizzie grins at Darcy while she wraps her arms around him and says: “Would you like to write Heard Our Daughter’s Heartbeat for the First Time on the calendar, or should I?”
